To be honest, My Hero Academia (MHA) is at this time one of my favorite anime. Out of all anime, I suggest this as the one to start with! Compared to other shounen I have seen, it is simply fantastic. I know some of the classics like Naruto and Dragon Ball are also considered shounen, but they have lots of parts where one can get bored watching. Unlike those shows, MHA always keeps your interest peaked with new villains and exciting scenarios - there’s never a dry episode. This show has 4 seasons consisting of 88 episodes, and the manga was created by Kohei Horikoshi. There are also 2 movies and a few OVAs.
It is a mostly family-friendly show, aside from one pervy character and some light swearing I would not suggest it for very young children. Nevertheless, My brother, who is 9, watches it, so I would leave it to each individuals’ parents to decide. There is some minor swearing but it is not very bad though, including words like “sh*t”, “b*stard," "hell," "dammit." But there is very little profanity in this show. There is a bath scene where it slightly shows a few girls, but nothing close to being inappropriate. I mean, it is a shounen after all. There is not a lot of gore, some scenes show blood, but nothing too disturbing. I have a few particularly squeamish friends who have watched MHA and were A-Okay with it. There is some death and blood, but, compared to other anime shows I have seen it is very mild. In Canada, it is rated PG, and in the US it is TV-14. Children around a teen or tween age should have no problem watching it. Younger kids around the age of 9 - 11 should probably have some sort of permission from parents or if they want someone watching with them. But kids younger than 8 have no business watching my hero academia. However, If you are a teen starting anime and are offended by the content, I apologize but I suggest dropping Anime as a whole and build up a better tolerance before coming back. Anime is more mature than common animations like Disney, Dora, and Spongebob. In conclusion, I would say that My Hero Academia should be watched by people ages 10+, but it depends on the parents' opinion.
I have read the manga, watched both movies, and I have to say a few things. First of all, if you are reading the manga or want to read the manga - new chapters come out every week on friday. You can find the link to read it here. Please do buy the manga instead of finding it somewhere for free so you can support the creator’s hard work. Second, out of the two movies that are out as of 2020, I would say that in my opinion, Heroes Rising has a better plot that Two Heroes. However I did enjoy both movies. In 2021, there will be a new season and a new movie! There is also a lot more My Hero Academia Related Content that you can find if you like the show (see below)
Reading! <3
If you absolutely loathe spoilers or don't want to know ANYTHING about the show until you start watching, you probably should not continue reading. The paragraphs below contain my opinion on the TV show and might have slight spoilers. Of course, I always try to keep at a minimum.
My Hero academia is an entertaining show and has lots of unique characters. Some of the characters I love include Tamaki Amajiki, Eraserhead, Izuku midoriya and Toga Himiko. I like a lot of lesser-known characters. Some of the characters that I don't like are Sato, All Might, Endeavor, and Mineta. Plus, I hold some unusual opinions on All Might. My favorite part of the show is probably episode 38 or episode 42. I specifically chose these episodes because I like the tense or exciting aura they radiate. Episode 38 includes Shigaraki threatening Izuku and putting him in a scary situation, this moment makes you hold your breath in anticipation for the outcome! Episode 42 is one of my favorite fights in all of Anime. There are some great ones in Naruto and Dragonball or other shounen; Still, they get boring sometimes. But, this fight between the villain, Muscular, and a pro hero in training, Izuku keeps you on your toes, and the animation is phenomenal. Many different ships are radiating around the My hero academia fandom, but I only think a few of them are cannon, and more importantly, I think they look adorable. The most canon ship and an adorable one is definitely Ochako x Izuku. Two very easily flustered and pure characters. This is shown vividly in multiple scenes where Uraraka gets flustered by Izuku, or when Aoyama points out that she has a crush on Izuku. There is also this one moment when all the girls say that Uraraka has a crush, and she starts floating out of embarrassment. She then spots Izuku out the window and starts fangirling, in a way...
In the end, I definitely suggest this Anime and hope you do start watching it. Plus, this is definitely a great starter anime for all the baby weebs out there. If you are a weeb trying to find an excellent Anime for a friend, this is definitely the one for you.
